Today, I am going to introduce you to the best dancer in Indra’s court. She is an eternal dancer and a very beautiful lady too. Yes, you guessed it right, I am talking about the Apsara’s in the Indra’s court and her name starts with letter U. Got her name right?
Introduction to Urvashi:
Her name is Urvashi. She is the best dancer of Indra’s court and she is real beauty too. There are so many stories that surround Urvashi in Indian Mythology, including her birth. I like hearing more of her stories as she is the best dancer. Being a dancer myself, I want to know what made her a good dancer. So I pester my granddad to tell me more about her dancing stories only. Let me share with you the story about Urvashi that I am interested in as a dancer.
Urvashi the eternal Dancer:
Out of all the Apsara’s in Indra’s court, Urvashi is the best dancer, followed by Rambha, Menaka, and Chitrasena. When Arjuna visits Lord Indra in his court to get trained in using various weapons used by the gods, he sees Urvashi for the first time.
After finishing all his training, when Arjuna wants to return back to the Earth, then Indra reminds him that there is one more weapon in Gandharva Sastra and Arjuna is yet to learn that weapon.
Arjuna tells, Indra what is the use of the skills which these Apsara’s use. The music and dance are not at all weapons and so they are not needed for a warrior like him. But Indra insists that these creative skills like music and dance too can be used as weapons. He also says that only time would teach Arjuna how beautiful these weapons are. So Arjuna starts learning music and dance from Urvashi. Urvashi likes Arjuna a lot and asks him to marry her. But Arjuna refuses the marriage, as Urvashi is his master. So then Urvashi gets angry and gives him the curse to become a dance master in the future.
When Arjuna and his brothers have to enter into exile for 13 years, then he remembers what Indra had told him in heaven the other day. So he dresses up like a dance master and goes into exile along with his family. During this exile only he starts teaching Uttara the dance. Uttara would be so impressed with Arjuna’s dance skills that she starts loving him. But again here too, Arjuna tells Uttara that he is like her father. And so she can marry his son.
So, that’s how our warrior prince Abhimanyu marries Uttara. We have read about him at the start of our journey. Please click this link to read more stories about Indian Mythology under the #A to Z Challenge. Happy to be participating in the #BlogchatterA2Z and #AtoZChallenge
My learnings from Urvashi:
I want to become the best dancer like her and so my granddad tells me that only through practice we can become best in anything. So am going regularly to my dance classes and also practicing at home. What about you my dear friends?
